Hardwood vs. Laminate

So you are undecided! These materials differ vastly with regards to aesthetics, performance and construction. Here are some facts that will help you decide.

In my opinion, there is no substitute for real hardwood. Laminate looks like hardwood, but does it really have the same aesthetic appeal. Most people can tell the difference between hardwood floors and laminate flooring. Even with the latest technological advances, it is still possible to spot the laminate floor. Although laminate has a picture representing hardwood, it does not have the same character or authenticity.

Hardwood is a natural material, and thus displays inherent weaknesses due to its porous structure. Hardwood is filled with little holes which weaken the structure, making it easy to scratch and dent, as well as stain easily. Laminate on the other hand is a man made material and does not display the same inherent characteristics as hardwood floors. Laminate is scratch and dent resistant, as well as being almost stain proof.

Laminate is perfectly suited to households with heavy traffic, and costs less than laminate, making it perfect for budget conscious people. If you have an active household with young kids and large pets, laminate flooring could be the perfect option.

So what is the downside? Firstly as mentioned above, regardless of all the improvements, laminate still looks like laminate. As hardwood floors age, so they gain character. The tiny scratches, fading, denting and in some cases staining, all add to the character of the floor. In fact, consumers now pay a premium for hardwood floors that have been artificially aged. Laminate on the other hand, does not age well; instead it becomes worn and loses its luster after a period of time. Also laminate floors, unlike hardwood floors, cannot be refinished.

When selling a home, hardwood floors will command a premium, and in most cases the cost of the hardwood floors will be recouped. The same cannot be said for laminate flooring. Hardwood floors that are properly maintained will never have to be replaced.
